My colleague showed me this story yesterday; it is a brilliant example of how social media can amplify conversation, in this case, chinese whispers.
The original post started in the morning and contained the following..
Street style shooting in Oxford Circus for ASOS and Diet Coke. Let me know if you’re around!!
Assistant at ASOS fashion magazine
Quickly this news spread like wildfire claiming there was a shooter on the loose at Oxford Circus and people were to stay in their offices. A string of tweets revealed the panic of tweeters within the area, which can be viewed on Exquisite Tweet, this also followed with Oxford Circus trending on Twitter.
The news soon dissipated by the afternoon this was most likely due to the fact that news media didn’t pick up on it and start to cover the story. Was it a lack of the news channels not monitoring social networks or did they know about it all along and chose to ignore it?
Did anyone get caught up in this story yesterday?
