What’s the future for Yahoo?

CEO Carol Bartz was fired from Yahoo in a call from Roy Bostock, chairman of the Yahoo Board.  “I am very sad to tell you that I’ve just been fired over the phone by Yahoo’s Chairman of the Board.

In the official announcement from Yahoo Roy Bostock said:

“The Board sees enormous growth opportunities on which Yahoo! can capitalize, and our primary objective is to leverage the Company’s leadership and current business assets and platforms to execute against these opportunities. We have talented teams and tremendous resources behind them and intend to return the Company to a path of robust growth and industry-leading innovation. We are committed to exploring and evaluating possibilities and opportunities that will put Yahoo! on a trajectory for growth and innovation and deliver value to shareholders.”

So what does this mean for Yahoo? It seems that Yahoo are rarely in the news anymore whilst companies like Google and Facebook are battling to dominate where we spend our time online. What does Yahoo have to offer?

A quick visit to their homepage and I struggle to see how things have changed much over the years. For a search engine, its pretty cluttered with ads, news, topics and images I didn’t ask to see. To me, Yahoo really seems to lack a personality or identity and there are very few reasons I would visit the homepage. Maybe thats just me, perhaps I am no longer the target market?

Are you a Yahoo user? Where do you see it’s future?

  1. Good observations Emily. It’s true – does Yahoo have a place any longer? The only big area for them is email, but with gmail dominating and even Hotmail in resurgence, I too struggle to see the future and unique selling points of Yahoo. Interesting times ahead, especially given the bad PR….
